This blog, made by Erica Design Room, is about more than art. It is about storytelling, access, and preserving the culture of Haitian artwork one piece at a time.

The Home of a True Collector of Haitian History
This blog began with an unexpected experience at an estate sale in Washington, DC. One that left a lasting impression on how I see art, history, and legacy. The sale belonged to a true collector of Haitian history. Their home was filled with artworks, books, sculptures, and textiles, all carefully sourced from Haiti and Haitian artists. Every room told a story. It felt less like shopping and more like stepping into a living archive.
I was initially drawn to the estate sale because I saw an abundance of Black art being shared online, and I wanted to experience it firsthand. When I arrived, the turnout was overwhelming. Collectors, curators, artists, and everyday admirers filled the space. The energy confirmed something important: people are deeply interested in art that carries cultural meaning and historical depth.
What stayed with me most was the intention behind the collection. This individual had spent a lifetime preserving beauty, culture, and memory. It made me reflect on legacy and on the idea that art can outlive us and continue to speak long after we are gone. I left inspired, hoping that one day I, too, can collect art and history in a way that allows me to leave something beautiful for the world.
After sharing my experience on TikTok, I was surprised by the response. People reached out with questions, curiosity, and genuine interest in purchasing Haitian artwork, especially those who were unable to attend the estate sale themselves. That moment became the catalyst for this blog. I decided to curate Haitian artwork intentionally, creating access for others who want to collect meaningful pieces and support Haitian artists.
In addition, I curated artwork under $1,000 from respected galleries that specialize in Haitian art and global contemporary voices. These platforms allow collectors to explore works from multiple galleries in one place, often with transparent pricing, shipping options, and the flexibility to make an offer below the asking price. This approach empowers buyers, whether seasoned collectors or first-time art buyers, to engage directly and build a collection at their own pace.
